NOMANSLAND elected to take first knock on Saturday against Sway and were met by one of the best visiting attacks seen on the green for many years. After losing Matt Sharman early on, Gary Loveless and Darren Grayer dug in against Sway's pacemen, and managed to tick along at three an over until Loveless was castled for 27 with the score on 61. Grayer, 25, was then joined by Chris Walton and they progressed on into the 90s before Grayer nicked one behind. Walton looked in little trouble, although wickets were falling around him. At 123-6, with just seven overs to go, only a modest score looked on the cards, before Walton, in a blistering partnership of 65 with Carl Mason, finally broke free of the shackles. Four huge sixes had the score racing along, and he was eventually seventh out in the final over for a superb 79, while Mason was unbeaten on 14 at the close. Thistleton, 2-40, and Steadman, 2-33, picked up the best figures in the impressive Sway attack. The first over of their reply saw Jason Franks pick up a wicket, and it could have been two as the dangerman Neal Attapattu was put down in the gully on the last ball of the over. The batsman made them pay with a super innings, and although Grayer also picked up an early wicket, Nomansland were hampered by two bowling injuries which left them short in attack. Attapattu, 80, and skipper John Grasham, with an unbeaten 76, took the visitors well on the way to victory before Attapattu went. Grayer, 2-42 from his ten overs, bowled excellently for the home side. Result: Nomansland 188-7 lost to Sway 192-3.
