SALISBURY Tennis Club held its annual Tournament Finals on Saturday, which produced first time winners in the men’s singles, ladies doubles and the mixed doubles. Previous runner-up Eric Simpson claimed the men’s singles title, taking a 4-0 lead against Matt O’Sullivan in each set before winning each 6-2. Karina Weedon, having not played in the event since 2003, claimed her sixth title with a comfortable win over Eila Barron. In winning the men’s doubles Tim Gadenne overtook Julian Foster with 15 tournament wins. With Simon White, they overcame last year’s runners-up Rory Smith and Lucas Griffiths. Fiona O’Sullivan claimed her fifth doubles title playing with Deborah Moloney, who won her first. They beat the holders Judith Cutler and Bridget Hamilton. The mixed doubles produced a coach versus coach final with Will Baillie partnering Sandy Borchert, and Lee Mahony with Theresa Griffiths. Sandy, having played two matches already, proved the key to their success. Along with Carina Birt earlier in the day, Sandy had lost the veterans ladies doubles to team players Jane Eminson and Sue Grimshaw, and also the ladies doubles playback to Trina Smith and Virginia Rolfe. Geoff Naish and Jane Eminson beat the holders Chris Rolfe and Judith Cutler in the veterans mixed while Iain and Ros Littlejohn came from a set down to take the playback over Richard Cole and Mary-Ann Pelton. Deborah Moloney claimed two singles with a win over Tracey White and then a tough match against Cilla Cunningham winning on the deciding tie-breaker. Fergus Littlejohn also needed a tie-breaker to beat James Turner in the men’s playback event. Tricia Dragonetti picked up two veteran playback titles in singles and doubles.
